What exactly does it mean to "abide" Does it mean to pray or to attend Bible study regularlyDoes it mean to attend church on Sunday As diligently as committed believers are in doing these things, none of them can be considered "abiding". In John 15:10, Jesus is very clear about what it means to abide in him. "If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in His love." And what are the commandments He's referring to here In Matt 22:37-40, Jesus commands us to love God with all our heart, and with all our soul, and with all our mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves. In doing this, we abide - we love Him (and others) from the very core of our being. Our hearts and mind are always on Him and on His people. We are totally consumed with Him - we cannot live apart from Him and apart from His love. We are so much "in" Him that we can no longer see own likenesses! Imagine Jesus on the cross with His arms stretched out wide. Abiding is seeing yourself as one of His limbs, strategically and securely anchored in Him, being constantly filled with the love pouring from His heart.

There are 3 distinct personal benefits to you abiding in Christ:

1. The Spirit of Truth will live within you - In John 14:16-17 Jesus promises that if any believer loves Him by keeping His commandments, the Holy Spirit will abide with him forever - it will "dwell with you and will be in you." When you abide, this Spirit will lead, guide and remind you of His principles and promises. It will also teach you all things. You will have a personal compass that will keep you moving in the right direction!

2. Christ will always comfort you when you need Him - "I will not leave you comfortless," He promises in Jn 14:18. When you face pain and adversity as you bear your personal cross, your Comforter will come to you and bring peace and healing. You will never be alone in tough times!

3. He will show Himself to you - In John 14:21 He promises that if you keep His commandments (love Him and love others), not only will He and His Father love you in return, but He will manifest Himself to you. In other words, you will be able to see evidence of Him in your daily life. The manifest presence of God will change your family, your marriage, your finances, your abilities - your life!
