There is nothing quite like an open fire. From the romantic glow of the logs to the crackling sound as it burns and the amazing heat given off. It is a great source of free heat and energy if you use recycled materials or fallen wood from correctly managed sources.

There are some things you can do to help make the lighting and burning process a lot easier and more enjoyable though. You don't want to end up frustrated with a room full of smoke and little in the way of heat.

Remember to have your chimney swept each year. A blocked flue can not only make an unpleasant fire, but can also be very dangerous. Ensure that you have the damper, or draft flap open when you start the lighting process. Many fireplaces have a handle to operate this device, but it is worth making a double check that it is functioning by looking up the chimney and checking that it is open. Obviously, you want to do this BEFORE you light the fire. If the flap is closed then the heat, smoke and flames only have one way to go - back into your room.

Your fireplace may have doors, if this is the case then ensure that you open them well in advance to equalise the temperatures between the fireplace and the room. You want to make sure that the warm air is flowing up the chimney rather than cold air being forced down it.

Next you should check the airflow or draft. To do this you will need to create a little smoke. A match or candle is ideal. You can also buy purpose made smoke blocks for this. You should see the smoke being drawn up the chimney. If this is not the case then recheck the flap. If it is still not going up then the flue may be blocked and should be swept to make sure it is safe.
